Why have we as a society become addicted to putting every aspect of our lives on social media? People on FB are just one status away from "Checking In" to the nearest toilet and posting about the most recent shit they took.
Now, we have taken things a step further and have started to create these accounts called "Finstas." For those lucky enough not to know what these are, a "Finsta" is short for a Fake Instagram page. It is pretty much a page for people to post things that they don't want to post on their regular instagram. Most things that people post on their finstas are things that are so immature and petty, that the user doesn't want other people to see because even they know how dumb it is. Stupid? I know. Yet somehow there are hundreds of thousands of these finstas on Instagram. I mean, if you don't want people seeing a certain picture, how about YOU DON'T POST IT AT ALL??
For example, Harley Barber from Alabama. She posted on her FINSTA a horribly racist video. She was then exposed, expelled from school, and now everyone hates her. Really, Harley? You knew what you were saying was so inappropriate and racist for your regular instagram, so you had to put it on your FINSTA? NEWSFLASH. Just because you made a FINSTA doesn't exempt you from the fact that once you put something on the Internet, it STAYS on the internet.
As we grow older we are supposed to grow wiser and become productive members of society, but with people caring so much more about a virtual world than the physical world around them, we are doing just the opposite.
I have attempted to follow a few of my friends' Finstas, but quickly found myself hitting the unfollow button after losing several brain cells to watching or looking at the dumb stuff I saw posted. Most of the time, it was pictures and videos of themselves drinking and acting like drunk morons. Other posts were subliminal messages to either the guy they are on and off with, or one of their friends who they like but can't stand at the same time. IT IS SO IMMATURE! Why do we feel the need to post every single emotion of ours into a social media post? What happened to just writing your feelings down in a diary? Why post things on social media that could potentially jeopardize your future?
Also, let's look at this another way. If you would rather go online to rant about your problems to complete strangers than talk to your friends about it, don't you think you should probably get new friends or people who actually care about you????
Going back to my point that people make Finsta's to talk crap about people: What happened to the days where if we had a problem with someone, we actually told the person how we felt?? Social Media brings out the phoniness in so many people. How can you subliminally talk about someone you just went out to lunch with the week before? Also, if you don't like a person, WHY ARE YOU GIVING THEM YOUR ATTENTION BY TALKING ABOUT THEM ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA? I grew up learning that if you don't like a person, you keep their names out of your mouth.
At the end of the day, what you put on your social media is YOUR CHOICE. But, just remember this. Talking about others behind a stupid filtered photo doesn't make you any better. Taking videos of you smoking blunts doesn't make you any cooler. And if you are a racist, just completely stay off of social media. No one wants to listen to your ignorance.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
